Doors & Windows

This page shows some of my past completed works of doors & windows. I make all exterior joinery in iroko & sapele, both very durable hardwoods which have a long life span. Interior work is mainly made in oak or redwood but I can use any timber the customer requires if it is deemed suitable for the task.

I can glaze and paint for a total finish and use micro-porous paints which allow the timber to breathe and prevent rot. Glazing is done using toughened, acoustic laminate (for sound insulation), double glazed units, heritage slim units or any other specialised glass required.

The first sets of galleries detail doors I have made, windows are shown further down the page.

Doors & entrances

Exterior doors are made exclusively in iroko (unless other timber is desired), extremely durable with very little seasonal movement, a timber that stands up very well to all weathers!

All the doors / gates below were made / painted / finished and fitted by myself. Click on each picture for an enlarged view.

A multipaned front door

Made in iroko, this heavy front door was made for a large Georgian house in Crewkerne. With 16 separate panes of glass making up the top light. Floating raised panels below.

A very large iroko front door

Made, painted / finished, glazed with 12mm bevelled glass, fitted complete with all locks and hardware.

A pair of redwood interior doors

Made to blend / match the original Georgian pine panelling. Made in redwood, pre-seasoned down to 6% moisture levels to avoid shrinkage once fitted, raised / bevelled panel detail on both sides and made to line up / compliment and copy the panelling surrounding. The timber has been sealed to protect but will be left to colour down naturally over the next several months before a final coloured varnish / finish is applied.

A pair of panelled pine doors

Made in reclaimed pine cut from old beams, made to complment, in style and colour, other doors in the house. Oiled on the outside, painted white on the inside.

Arch top oak door and frame

Made to compliment the nearby same styled old back door to the house. The customer wanted a flat planked surface both sides, no ledge and braces etc. I had to make this as a composite build, planks both sides with an mdf core glue up in the middle. This is to keep the door flat and prevent cupping. If the door had been solid planks, it would have moved and twisted during the seasons, difficult to control!

The door has unusually expanded by a few millimetres since fitting (interior woodwork usually always loses moisture and shrinks a little when taken from workshop to indoors) and I have had to visit twice and plane up the edge to fit again. This is because the house is old and the original flagged floor is laid directly onto soil, moisture is in the air, a solid planked door would have stood no chance! The reveals were panelled in also and a new threshold made to cover the worn step.

Gates & Door shutters

Made using two inch thick iroko framing with Tricoya extreme durable mdf for the planked infills, these very heavy twelve foot wide gates are extremely durable and strong. They have been in place for four years now and despite full sun and freezing winters, there is no warping / shrinking / cracking etc - built to last. They are mounted on heavy green oak posts, one sunk into the ground, the other is resin bolted into the house. They operate on IR controlled electric motors, a video of them in operation below.

Made the same way as the above gates, these large shutters below make the exterior glass doors behind them, private & secure.

Windows

The following galleries show some of the windows I have made. I am able to replicate originals for period / listed buildings or design new to fit the character of a property. Click on the images for an expanded view.

A very specific build to match the original. Faux leads, iron internal security bars with opening side casements. A large window made in iroko and all painted ready to fit.

A single hardwood casement window

A pair of casement windows, like for like replacements for rotten originals

Another pair of casements! Again - like for like copies of originals
